“I am so honored to be the recipient of the inaugural Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award for a woman composer/lyricist. It has been 7 months since I received this award, and I can honestly say that it has transformed my life. As a direct result of this award, I have:

  • I have met regularly with incredible mentors, the amazing producer Daryl Roth, and the brilliant and fearless Broadway composer Jeanine Tesori, who constantly inspire me to reach for more in my career.

  • an agentrepresenting me, for the first time in my life.

  • taken meetings all over town, building relationships with top off-Broadway theatres and Broadway producers interested in new writers.

  • been able to see more than 20 plays and musicals, on Broadway and off, which I never could have afforded to do otherwise.

  • recorded a professional demoof some songs from my new show which has directly led to exciting new opportunities for me.

If I think too much about everything that’s happened in the past few months, I just am in shock, it’s so surreal, so I try to just keep my head down and keep writing, to honor the faith in me and in my creativity that this award represents. Through the Ziegfeld Club I’ve also gotten to know a really wonderful community of women who write for the musical theatre.  I have completed a first draft of my show THE FAMILY RESEMBLANCE!  This is unbelievable to me and never would have happened without the help of the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award!!” – Masi Asare
